Hi All Does anyone know if there is any possibility of obtaining the deck gear / flange that holds the rudder at the deck level. My Holland 25 is wearing though the fitting. James

Hi James. I had the same problem! It was a cheap thin casting on Omega and to make things worse it was metal on metal! No wonder it wore. I had my local engineer make up a new plate out of stainless. I also lengthened the rudder shaft slightly to accommodate the increased size of the new plate and included a collar that attaches (allen bolts) to the rudder shaft itself and acts as a bearing for the downward pull of the rudder. The plate is thru bolted. The other problem with the old fitting was the small size of it meant the fixing screws were so close to the rudder tube that you couldn't even fit a washer! This mean a lot of localised stress and subsequent gel coat cracking and was also extremely difficult to keep tight, such that the whole mess moved around with normal loads on the rudder. The new plate was larger with widely spaced mounting holes to clear the rudder tube and was installed with appropriate washers to spread the load. There were mechanical stops on the old plate that were designed to restrict rudder movement past a particular angle but these again had worn and were not effective. The new setup allows the rudder to hang a little lower, just enough to clear the hull and without any stops fitted allows the rudder to freely pivot 360 deg. All in all a MUCH more appropriate fitting. If you want more detail I can whip up a sketch for anybody interested.
